NY/NJ Trail Conference

Established in 1920 as an all-volunteer organization to build and maintain trails in NY and NJ. They sell maps and books dealing with southern New York State and northern New Jersey. If you need to find a hike leader, they will send you their list of hiking clubs that can help you. There is a lending library for members and a newsletter that lists hikes and events in and around NYC. You can also request their leaflet "You Don't Need a Car," which tells you how to take public transportation to hiking trails.
