There are over 500 art galleries in New York; most are located in Chelsea between 6th Avenue and 10th Avenue, from 14th Street to 34th. SoHo, between Houston and Canal and 6th Avenue and Broadway, used to be the center of the art gallery scene in NYC, but many of the art galleries have been replaced by trendy clothing stores and restaurants. You will still find some galleries here, but not nearly as many as there used to be. Other concentrations are in Midtown, in the area of 5thAvenue and 57thSt. and on the Upper East Side around Madison and Park Avenues. Also, there are established art galleries in Brooklyn (mostly in Williamsburg) and on Long Island.
In these galleries you will find paintings, prints, sculptures, jewelry, rugs and many other types of art. Below you will find not only a comprehensive list of the better art galleries, but also selected art galleries grouped by their specialities.
Geographic distribution of art galleries. In general, Chelsea and SoHo galleries show art from new or recently established artists. Midtown galleries focus on better known artists. The Upper East Side galleries concentrate on antiques and historical art. However, there are many exceptions to this rule.
Permanent Exhibitions:Galleries and exhibition halls with permanent exhibits are listed in MUSEUMS. The listings below only contain listings of galleries offering art for sale or who are promoting the works of artists.
