The Dining Scene in New York City
New York is truly one of the culinary capitals of the world. Every conceivable cuisine is well represented here: American, Brazilian, Chinese, Ethiopian, French, German, Indian, Italian, Jamaican, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Pakistani, Thai, and Vegetarian.....just to scratch the surface.
With so many choices, deciding on a restaurant is no easy task, and compiling a list of them is even more difficult. Nonetheless, here are some of the citys great restaurants and (more importantly) ways to find out about the rest.
Listings of restaurant reviews and guides are given in the Restaurant Guide and Reviews For New York section. On-line reviews and guides are listed in the Internet Guides to Restaurants in New York portion of the Citidex restaurant and cafe category.
The Citidex interactive listings for restaurants are the fastest on the Internet and offer more information than most other Internet directory listings. Citidex takes full advantage of the interactive nature of the Internet. You can click to maps and subways to locate restaurants. Some restaurants have chosen to link their websites, menus, copies of their reviews, parking maps and pictures of their interior and exterior. These can be reached by clicking on any underlined part of the text.
The "dining scene" is organized in the following categories and topics:
Restaurants: A Comprehensive List: This is a list of the places to eat in Manhattan that have been reviewed in various sources. It is not yet complete; we add about fifty new restaurants each week. The list takes about sixty seconds to load completely, but then you can scroll through or print all 1,200 listings.
Restaurants By Cuisine: Here the restaurants are catagorized by their principal style of cuisine. Sometimes, one restaurant may be listed in several categories.
Restaurants By Area Of Manhattan And Cuisine: This catagory is still under construction but will be completed soon. At the present, it contains a brief description of the neighborhoods and the cuisines commonly found in each neighborhood.
Delicatessens: New York City's delis are world famous. Delicatessens offer sandwiches, salads, soups and other quick fare. Some may have seating, while others may just have a counter at which you can order.
Pizzerias: Pizza was invented in New York City and was exported to Italy. NYC has some of the best pizza in the world. Offerings range from the traditional New York style pizza to vegetarian and gourmet pizzas.
Cafes: Cafes have a different ambiance than restaurants. They are perfect for people watching or lingering over coffee. The fare is typically lighter than that served in most restaurants and is generally structured around lunchtime offerings.
Fast Food In New York: This is where you will find listings for such ubiquitous chains as McDonald's as well as more interesting offerings such as Curry in A Hurry, the Chinatown noodle shops, Daily Soup and the corner hot dog vendor.
Soon, the listings will include "star" ratings which will take into account factors such as food quality, ambiance and service. The restaurants will also be rated in terms of expense. This rating is similar to the price ratings of the New York Times in that it is based on the average price for an entree.
