TELEPHONE CODES (AREA CODES) FOR LOCAL AREA
The three-digit telephone (or city) codes in the USA are called "area codes". For most places in the USA, you must dial a "1" before the area code.
New York City has several area codes because there are millions of phones within the city limits. They include 347, 718, 917, 212, 646
To make calls to the NY/NJ metropolitan area you must first dial 1 followed by the area code and then the number. Ex: 1 + 212 + 5551234
To dial into Manhattan from outside of Manhattan to a pager or beeper number, you must dial "1-917" before the number.
The demand for telephone numbers has been increasing very rapidly because of the widespread use of fax machines, extra lines for access to the internet, the use of cellular phones and beepers. Thus, new area codes are being added to major metropolitan areas quite frequently. Be aware that if you are not able to reach a phone number that is believed to be valid, the problem may be that the area code has changed as recently happened in the New York City area.
